Why diesel odour reaches inside your facility
Diesel odour comes from volatile organic compounds (VOCs), mainly hydrocarbon vapours, together with sulphur compounds carried in outdoor air. Whatever their source, once those vapours are in the air around a facility, the fresh air handling unit draws them in through the outdoor air intake and the HVAC system sends them to every room it serves.
The particulate filters in an air handling unit, such as pre filters and bag filters, are made to capture dust and particles. Odour molecules are gases, far smaller than any particle, and pass straight through them.
Activated carbon works on gases through adsorption. Its internal pore structure holds odour and VOC molecules on a very large surface inside the carbon while the air flows on. This is gas phase filtration, also called chemical filtration, and it is the standard approach to odour control in HVAC systems.

Does a standard HVAC filter stop diesel smell and odour?
Standard HVAC filters are particulate filters, made to capture dust and particles. Diesel odour comes from gases and vapours, which pass through particulate filters. Gas phase filtration with activated carbon is used for odour control.
What is gas phase filtration?
Gas phase filtration, also called chemical filtration, treats gases and vapours rather than particles. In HVAC systems it is usually a stage of activated carbon in the AHU or FAHU, where odour and VOC molecules are adsorbed onto the carbon as the air passes through.
