Activated carbon is a porous carbon material with an internal surface of 500 to 1500 m²/g. It is produced by thermal activation of coconut shell, coal, or wood. The pore network captures organic compounds, dissolved metals, and gases by adsorption on the pore surface, not by absorption into the bulk material.

Key Types of Activated Carbon

Pellets (Extruded) Activated Carbon

Activated Carbon Regeneration
An installed activated carbon bed loses capacity as contaminants fill the pore surface. After breakthrough is detected the spent carbon is either replaced or regenerated. Thermal reactivation at 700 to 900 °C in a steam atmosphere recovers 80 to 95 percent of the original capacity, depending on the contaminant load.
Chemical regeneration with acid, base, or solvent systems, or biological regeneration with microbial cultures, gives 60 to 85 percent and is used where thermal reactivation is not suitable.
